In loving memory of
Grace Ndlovu
1951 — 2026
Life Story
Grace was born in Sophiatown on 14 March 1951, the second of five children, in a house where the kettle was never allowed to go cold.
She trained as a nurse and spent thirty-one years on the wards, most of them in children's care. Colleagues remember her neat handwriting, her patience with frightened mothers, and the way she could settle a crying baby in the time it took to draw a curtain.
She married Samuel in 1972 and they raised four children in Meadowlands, in a house that slowly filled with grandchildren, school shoes, hymn books and trays of cuttings from her garden.
Her kitchen was the family's real address. There was always a plate for a visitor, a chair for whoever arrived, and a story about everyone who had ever passed through.
In her last years she gardened with marigolds, kept the radio on for the Sunday service, and taught her grandchildren the words to every hymn she knew.

Grace welcomed me into her kitchen the week I moved into the street, and she never once let me leave without tea. My children still talk about her biscuits.
Reply from the family · Thandi Ndlovu, daughter
Thank you, Aunt Nomsa. She spoke about that first afternoon for years, and she kept the tin you brought her.
A neighbour for thirty years and a friend for all of them. Grace knew every child on the street by name and every one of their birthdays.
Sending our love to the Ndlovu family. Gogo Grace prayed over our firstborn in this very kitchen. We will never forget her kindness.
She taught me how to hold a frightened mother's hand on the children's ward. Everything I know about this work, I learnt beside Grace.
Grace fed me when I had nothing and never mentioned it again to anyone. A good, quiet, generous woman.
Gogo taught us the hymn harmonies on the stoep on Sundays. We will sing them the same way for her.
